Dermalogica Skin Care
THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANSING
The basis of skin perfection and all salon treatments is thorough cleansing.
The skin must be cleansed thoroughly without over-stimulation or disturbing
the natural acid mantle. Most salon routines do not attach enough importance
to this aspect of the treatment, but we at Dermalogica believe that this part
of the treatment is vital to detoxify the skin. The skin is the largest organ
of elimination and must be kept free of waste. Use of the correct movements
will aid greatly in cleansing, as the lymphatic flow should be stimulated as
the skin is cleansed to aid tissue detoxination.
1 . Prepare the client and remove the lipstick and eye make-up.
2. Apply the Dermalogica cleanser with a flowing effleurage spreading movement
over the entire face and throat.
3. The routine should commence with rhythmic rollpatting strokes and careful
attention paid to the amount of makeup worn and areas of congestion. The centre
of the chin, nose and forehead all require more repetitious strokes due to frequent
blockages that occur in these areas.
4. A successful cleansing routine must remove all the tinted make-up from the
skin surface, remove dead cellular matter and gently purify the epidermis.
5. If using Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, an electrical brush cleanse may be preferred,
as it facilitates a lathering of the cleanser and provides a mild exfoliation.
The routine of work follows that of a manual cleanse with added concentration
on especially oil-rich areas.
6. Damp esthetic sponges or cotton pads must be used to remove all cleansers.
Dermalogica Cleansing FAQ
Questions and Answers Regarding Cleansing
1 . Q. "Why should I use a cleanser? Won't soap and water do just as well?"
A. There is no soap as effective as a Dermalogica cleanser in removing debris
and makeup. Soaps are alkaline and in direct opposition to your skin's natural
acid balance. All the Dermalogica cleansers have been formulated by skin care
experts to work in harmony with your skin.
2. Q. "How much cleanser should I use for each application?"
A. Use the amount you feel most comfortable with to do the job. We have found
a small amount to be adequate and a very little goes a long way.
3. Q. "Do you need to cleanse in the morning if you cleanse at night?"
A. We recommend that you cleanse twice a day to detoxify the skin. Many people
like to wash their skin in the morning and for them, we recommend the use of
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel as a morning face wash. Before the application of moisturizers,
the skin should always be thoroughly clean.
4. Q. "Can I tissue off the cleanser instead of rinsing it off with water?"
A. No. Dermalogica cleansers are designed to be completely water-soluble, and
should be removed by rinsing. In the past, old-fashioned cleansing creams were
formulated with heavy mineral oil as a base. Because mineral oil is not water-soluble,
the cleanser had to be tissued off and the oil resid"ue removed with alcohol-based
astringents. This often left the skin under-cleansed and lacking moisture from
the drying effects of the alcohol. Dermalogica's system of thorough cleansing
and complete removal of the cleanser with water ensures that the skin is left
"deep cleansed and supple".
THE IMPORTANCE OF TONERS
Skin toning is a simple and important skin care step, unique to Dermalogica.
We believe in three basic steps to healthy skin:
Dermalogica's skin toning products are designed to improve the condition and
appearance of the skin. They increase the moisture absorption of the skin surface
by refining it. They improve the smoothness of the skin by retexturizing it.
And, they increase the quality of the skin by conditioning it.
Dermalogica skin toners are all used after cleansing the skin and each product
lays a foundation for all products that are applied afterwards. Some of the
toners are used on a daily basis while others are used during the week as needed.
Used regularly, skin conditioners enhance the effects of the Dermalogica skin
care regimen and prepare the skin for moisturization. They contribute to increased
skin smoothness and suppleness. Skin texture and refinement are improved and
the benefits of other Dermalogica products and more evident.
Dermalogica Toner FAQ
Questions and Answers Regarding Toners
1 . Q. "Do I need to use a toner on my skin, if I am rinsing off my cleanser
with water? Don't they do the same thing?"
A. When cleansers were formulated with heavy mineral oils, they were tissued
off and the oil residue removed with alcohol-based astringent toners on cotton
pads. This type of "toner" completed the cleansing step in skin care.
Because Dermalogica cleansers all rinse off completely with water, there is
no need for this astringent type of toner to complete the process. Dermalogica
Toner is a skin "conditioner" and evens out the porosity of the skin,
making the moisturizer more evenly absorbed. It is the first step to moisturizing
and is an essential part of every clients Dermalogica regimen.
2. Q. "Do I need to use a scrub if I am using my cleanser every day?"
A. Yes. A cleanser is designed to remove make-up and surface debris primarily
and is gentle enough to be used every day. Skin Prep Scrub is designed to remove
dulling, dead surface cells and is an intensive treatment.
3. Q. "How do I know which type of exfoliant conditioner to recommend,
either the Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub or Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant?"
A. While exfoliants are all designed to remove dead skin cells and retexturize
the skin, they work in different ways. For example, Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant has
an alpha hydroxy acid base and gently dislodges the surface skin cells, by dissolving
the "glue" that holds them to the surface. It is applied and left
to process for 10 to 15 minutes. Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub works by "rubbing off"
the surface skin cells and can actually work in support of the Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant. Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub is a fast and easy method of exfoliation. It can
be used in the shower, worked over the skin and removed immediately.
Choice of method should be based on client preference of use, and skin sensitivity
or breakouts. Abrasive scrubs should not be used extensively on acne or sensitivity
and these skin conditions would do better with Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant.
The human skin produces about one million skin cells every 40 minutes, which equates to over 36 million skin cells per day. As our skin cells renew from the deepest layer of the epidermis, the more surface cells harden and lose moisture. Eventually these cells detach from skin (via desquamation) and are replaced by younger cells moving up from the deeper layers. The rate at which new cells form in the Stratum Germinativum (also known as Stratum Basale) is known as cell renewal rate; the time it takes for the
cells to form in these deeper layers until the time of desquamation is known as the cell turnover time.
Desquamation also eliminates damaged and contaminated cells that carry pollutants and micro-organisms from the environment. These superficial skin cells don't always effectivelyfall from skin and may cause clogging and congestion while leaving the skin's surface dry and dull-looking. As we age, desquamation and cell turnover slow down, making professional exfoliation critical to removing the accumulation of cells that give a dry, dull appearance to the skin.
Through professional exfoliation, these dulling skin cells are effectively removed, and newer cells are revealed for a fresher, healthier appearance. Similarly, removing the excess barricade of cells from the skin's surface helps ingredients penetrate through the skin. As such, exfoliation is a critical step in any skin health regimen. Dermalogica's Exfoliants combine many unique technologies, ensuring maximum effectiveness and the utmost safety. Depending on the formula, your Dermalogica Exfoliant can include Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Retinol, Sulfur or enzyme peeling to give a total exfoliation system. Dermalogica professional Exfoliants are pH balanced, do not strip skin of essential moisture and leave skin feeling and looking extremely smooth and clear. A list of the Dermalogica Exfoliants below will help to make the cell turnover rate faster, leaving beautiful and blemished free skin.
Enhance the daily skin care regimen with powerful, problem-solving Dermalogica Masques. Designed for use one to two times per week based upon the skin's needs, each masque provides a dramatic boost to the skin. Whether the skin requires super-deep cleansing or intensive hydration and moisture therapy, Dermalogica Masques are the ideal regimen supplement to help overcome skin concerns.
Moisturizers are vital to every skin care regimen, regardless of skin condition, and do more than just moisten dehydrated skin. Emollients (usually substances) help lubricate skin while making it soft, pliable and smooth. Moisturizers also help to protect the skin's natural defenses against the environment while controlling moisture loss from the skin. This becomes more important as we age, when the Stratum Corneum's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) becomes less effective at regulating the skin's water balance. Dermalogica has a moisturizer for every skin condition; from chronically dry and prematurely-aging to skin with excess oil production and breakouts.
Dermalogica Concentrated Boosters
Concentrated Boosters are highly-active extracts that can be used to customize a client's regimen on a day-to-day basis. Designed to be used alone for targeted results or mixed in with Dermalogica Moisturizers or Masques, Concentrated Boosters are the perfect way for clients to take control of skin's natural fluctuations. Their versatility makes them
ideal in adapting any at-home regimen to the changes in climate, hormonal imbalance or lifestyle.
Dermalogica Targeted Treatments
Unlike the other formulas in the Dermalogica retail range, Targeted Treatments are designed to zone-in on specific areas of the face, rather than focus on overall conditions. They are each highly individualized in their application, and have a specialized role in the at-home regimen. The Targeted Treatment products you'll prescribe will be based heavily on the Face Mapping® skin analysis you conduct on each client. You should explain to your clients that the different zones of their faces each have specific needs—needs that can change daily!
Dermalogica Eye Treatments
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate, which means it is extra susceptible and more likely to be the first place to show any signs of skin damage caused by environmental assaults. Protect the health and appearance of eyes with our Eye Treatments, designed to be worn day and night for enhanced protection against environmental assaults while nourishing, hydrating, brightening and minimizing the appearance of dark circles and fine dryness lines.

Test the color on the side of the cheek, near the jaw line.
Research indicates that age spots contribute to the appearance of skin aging as much as a wrinkle. Learn about the triggers behind hyperpigmented skin, and ingredients that work to brighten and even skin tone for a more luminous appearance – and healthier skin.
Hyperpigmentation shows on skin in the form of brown spots (also referred to as age spots) and can cause an uneven, mottled skin tone. Hyperpigmentation can be the result of daylight exposure, endocrine (hormonal) factors and changes, usage of prescription drugs and/or wound healing when skin has been damaged. If you’re batting sun damage, age spots, acne scarring or other hyperpigmentation issues, the Dermalogica Brightening line is a powerful system for brightening and evening out your skin tone. Not only does the regime deliver results quickly, it doesn’t cause any of the premature aging that hyperpigmentation treatment products with harsh ingredients can sometimes inflict.
Dermalogica Daily Groomers
Daily grooming is a part of maintaining and improving not only the appearance, but the psyche as well. Daily grooming rituals are key to our state-of-mind, self-esteem and total skin health. Dermalogica's Daily Groomers help clients extend their skin health regiments to areas of the body that will benefits from cleansing, hydration, antioxidants and soothing botanicals as much as the face does.
Dermalogica Daylight Defense
Sunlight is without a doubt your skin's worst enemy, bombarding it on a daily basis with the UVA and UVB rays that promote premature aging and skin cancer. Statistics show that one in six individuals will develop skin cancer, and 90% of these cancers are the direct result of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. In fact, a severe sunburn before the age of eighteen exponentially increases your skin cancer risk, making a comprehensive program of sun protection vitally important for clients of all ages.
Dermalogica Daylight Defense is comprised of formulations that provide an invisible shield against UVA and UVB rays while working with each skin condition to improve its overall appearance and health. Research has found that antioxidant vitamins are as important as sunscreens when defending skin from the aging and burning effects of damaging UV light and free radicals. For this reason, four of our formulations contain exclusive UV Smart Booster Technology, a customized microcapsule that safeguards antioxidant vitamins C and E then bursts open upon contact with UV rays, releasing the vitamins for maximum free radical protection. We offer a choice of two sunscreen technologies: chemical based formulations that protect against UVA and UVB rays by absorbing them, and physical sunscreens that actually reflect damaging rays.
Dermalogica MediBac Clearing
A common misconception is that acne only affects teenagers. But more than ever before, adults are suffering with only and acneic skin conditions.
Clinical studies indicate that between 40 and 55 percent of the adult population age 20-40 are diagnosed with low grade, persistent acne and oily skin. According to the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 54 percent of women older than age 25 have some facial acne.
Research at The International Dermal Institute indicates that acne arising in adulthood is more likely to be inflammatory, with fewer comedones than teenage acne and lesions predominantly located around the mouth, chin and jaw line. Likewise, adults often have sensitized skin, or a combination of skin conditions in addition to their acne, which makes treatment more challenging than the treatment of teens, who generally have more resilient, uniform and oily skin.
The primary catalyst of adult acne is chronic stress. Balancing personal and professional responsibilities makes this generation of adults the most time-compressed generation in history, which contributes to chronic stress: the constant, continued and heightened level of stress that throws our adrenal glands into overdrive, which in turn can boost sebum production, setting the stage for acne development.
Adult acne can also be aggravated by internal and external factors. Internally, the psychological effects of adult acne can contribute to continued flare-ups and breakouts. When adults are frustrated by the signs of acne on their skin, it causes additional emotional stress, which contributes to a continued over-activity of the sebaceous glands and leads to the continued cycle of breakouts. Externally, the need to “pick” or “squeeze” breakouts places even more bacteria on skin.
While stress creates the trigger for acne, there are four main factors that contribute to the development of acne: overactive sebaceous glands (the production of too much oil), dead skin cell accumulation, bacteria and inflammation.
When overactive sebaceous glands produce too much oil, this oil spills onto the skin’s surface, creating a slick, greasy appearance. This excess oil acts as a binder, holding on to dead skin cells that were meant to be shed. The follicle becomes clogged with a mixture of oil and dead skin cells, prohibiting oxygen from entering. This creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which leads to the swelling, redness and inflammation around the follicle, resulting in acne.
To successfully treat, clear and prevent acne, the cascade of events leading to acne development must be controlled: we must regulate the sebaceous glands, promote exfoliation to help shed dead skin cells from the surface, kill bacteria and soothe inflammation.
The MediBac Clearing® system works to treat, clear and prevent adult acne without compromising skin’s integrity, which means skin is clearer and healthier.
Dermalogica AGE Smart
Wrinkles, altered pigmentation, loss of skin tone… we all associate these changes with skin aging. Age-related skin changes are the result of genetically programmed changes (intrinsic factors) and environmental wear-and-tear on the skin (extrinsic factors). While both influence the skin’s structure and function, extrinsic factors cause more pronounced changes.
Estimates state that 80-99% of what we see on our skin as adults is the result of exposure to daylight, which is referred to as photoaging. Manifestations of photoaging include an increase in wrinkle formation, a loss of tension and elasticity, degeneration of the vascular supply and skin thickness, hyperpigmentation and other skin discoloration, dilated capillaries (telangiectasis) and a reduction in the water-binding properties of the skin.
While scientists attribute the majority of these structural changes to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, it has only been in recent years that they have come to understand the actual biochemical triggers that instigate these changes. These are the chemical reactions that occur within the skin and include:
- Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), also known as free radicals.
- Activation of Metalloproteinase enzymes (Matrix Metalloproteinase or MMPs) with a subsequent decline in collagen biosynthesis.
- Glycation leading to Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs).
Dermalogica's AGE Smart segment is geared towards prevention of new signs of aging as well as correcting some of that already pronounced damage. With exciting and powerful ingredients such as:
- lactic acid - great for brightening up the skin as well as producing healthy hydration
- magnesium ascorbyl phosphate- stabilized form of vitamin C stimulates collagen and inhibits MMPs
- retinyl palmitate- this is encapsulated vitamin A that aides in cell renewal
Dermalogica's AGE Smart treatment designed to specifically treat and control the structural manifestations associated with skin aging and the biological triggers that lead to these changes, as well as treat the visible signs of skin aging to skin is smoother, firmer and healthier.

Treat the multiple triggers behind inflammation for lasting relief from sensitivity flare-ups. Itching, burning, stinging and redness are the obvious signs of sensitive skin. The triggers behind these sensations are less clear: genetics, hormones, stress, chemical assaults, foods and even aggressive skin treatments can intensify skin’s highly reactive state.
When skin demands serious relief, trust new UltraCalming™ from the skin health experts at Dermalogica.
The common thread behind irritation, flushing and stinging is inflammation. When paired with the loss of skin’s protective barrier, skin health is compromised and becomes highly reactive. UltraCalming™ contains UltraCalming™ Complex, our exclusive complex clinically proven to control neurogenic and immunogenic inflammatory pathways that lead to skin sensitivity.
- Immunogenic Inflammation
Triggered by the immune system, skin inflammation is caused by a foreign substance such as pollen or artificial fragrances.
- Neurogenic Inflammation
Triggered by the nervous system, sensitized or inflamed skin may be the result of the environment, chemicals or physical and emotional stress.
- Loss of Protective Barrier
Excess exfoliation, exposure to soap and water, even psychological stress can compromise the skin’s protective barrier, lowering tolerance against potential stressors resulting in sensitization and irritation.
UltraCalming™ contains UltraCalming™ Complex, our exclusive complex clinically proven to control neurogenic and immunogenic inflammatory pathways that lead to skin sensitivity.
- Acetyl Tetrapeptide-15
Targets neurosensitive skin by reducing painful sensations.
- Boerhavia Diffusa (Red Hogweed) Root Extract
Targets neurogenic inflammation, restores tissue integrity and soothes to restore skin’s normal sensitivity level for immediate and long-lasting effects.
