Simple Men's Skincare Routine

Who can benefit from skincare?

Skincare is for anyone, but on average, it targets women. Social media ads and stores tend to cater to a more feminine look, and we see a shift in marketing going forward. Some people may have a preconceived notion that men don't need to bother with many products or that skincare and beauty are just for women. We are here to say that is not the case. In this easy 6-step routine, we want to be clear anyone can use it!

Men have many different skin types

Guys with oily skin should exfoliate more often, while men with sensitive/dry skin should do it less often. A face scrub is a highly versatile product. It is essential to a skincare regimen and the secret weapon you might have been missing in your shave routine. Men have more active sebaceous glands and, therefore, more pores than women.

How is male skin different than female?

Sebum is produced twice as much as women's, so male skin is oilier and shinier than female skin. Because of this, the pH is lower than female skin and is prone to impurities and acne. Adult males are less prone to dry skin than adult females. Male skin is about 20 – 25 percent thicker than women's and has a more rigid texture. Additionally, male skin contains more collagen, which gives it a tighter, firmer appearance. Other than having facial hair, there are structural differences between men's and women's skin. Testosterone stimulation causes skin thickness, which accounts for why a man's skin is about 25% thicker than a woman's. There are also small amounts of estrogen and progesterone in male skin. It describes changes in male hormone levels that cause aging. The same symptoms are also known as testosterone deficiency, androgen deficiency, and late-onset hypogonadism. Male menopause involves a drop in testosterone production in men aged 50 or older. It's often affiliated with hypogonadism.

Hormone imbalances in men

A cause of hormone imbalance could come from food rich in saturated and hydrogenated fats found in red meat. Unhealthy fat can increase the production of estrogen and can worsen your symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Instead, have eggs and fatty fish. Levels may fluctuate over time, but symptoms can also occur due to stress, injury, illness, poor nutrition, or a lack of exercise. It can happen anytime, but it's more likely to appear as a person ages.

Why bother with a men's skincare routine?

A regular skin regimen helps your skin stay in good condition. You shed many skin cells throughout the day, so keeping your skin healthy is essential. A consistent routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles, and help keep your skin looking its best.

Five steps men should never skip in a skincare routine

While a daily skincare routine for men can be adjusted according to skin needs, there are some steps you should follow daily.

Step 1: cleanse

No matter who you are, your skin should start with cleansing. Your face is exposed to dirt and grime throughout the day, which can stick and cause breakouts from excess oil or dead cells. Choosing the right cleanser is key to ensuring your men's skincare routine starts on the right note.

Step 2: prep the skin with toner

If you're anything like us, your face wash has left behind a residue of some kind. And chances are good that this toner will be able to get rid of not just any impurities but also those pesky dry patches on the surface layer - which can lead to acne breakouts if left untreated. So we recommend beginning with something mild for all men's skin types before moving onto more harsh toners to avoid sensitivity reactions occurring during use.

Step 3: address the eye-area

Eye cream is a product you may not think you need, but we recommend rethinking that. The skin around your eyes has very few oil glands, leading to excessive dryness and causing fine lines to look more pronounced. So instead, treat your delicate under-eye area with a product that addresses your specific eye concerns.

Step 4: moisturize

If your skincare routine starts and ends with scrubbing your face with body wash in the shower, you're committing more than one skincare crime. After all, every face wash comes with a good moisturizer, regardless of skin type. Even if you have oily skin, moisturizer is a must because it helps keep your skin balanced and hydrated.

Step 5: reapply sunscreen

If there's one step in any skincare routine you can not skip, it's using an SPF of 30 or higher. Protecting your skin isn't just for beach days or direct light. Using an SPF is something you should do every day, regardless of the weather or how much time you spend outside. It's a skin habit that will be easy to stick to once you make it part of your men's daily routine. It may add an extra few minutes to your morning, but the benefits are worth it. Dermatologists recommend using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. You'll want to use an even layer of sunscreen on all exposed skin at least ten minutes before going outside and reapply SPF every two hours or after sweating or swimming. Other sun protective measures you should follow:

  • Staying the shade.
  • Avoiding direct sunlight midday.
  • Protecting your eyes with UV-filtering sunglasses.
