This sweet and aromatic root is emollient and soothing internally and externally. It is
detoxifying and, although stimulating, it counteracts stress. Externally, licorice root is
anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic. Licorice root has been found to have
skin-lightening properties. Michael P Tabibian, MD investigated glabridin, the main
ingredient in licorice extract for its inhibitory effect on pigmentation and found that it
inhibited tyrosinase activity of melanocytes without any cytotoxicity. Licorice is also
good in oral care products.
