Organic foods are trending because it’s supposedly healthier for you. It’s only inevitable that the skincare industry is marketing natural beauty products, claiming that it’s better for your skin. We know that organic foods have strict standards. The soil where crops are grown must be inspected and free of most synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and the crops cannot have been genetically modified. Animals raised on organic farms receive no antibiotics or growth hormones, are given feed that has been grown organically, and are able to roam around outside. With that said, does natural skincare products have similar strict standards?
What Is Natural Skincare?
Natural skincare products are free from synthetic chemicals that may have adverse effects on your health, such as parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. Products that are labeled natural are usually made from plants, botanical extracts, and minerals. Keep in mind that there are no regulations, so even products labeled “natural” may still have an adverse effect on your skin. Because of the lack of regulations, products labeled natural may still contain synthetic ingredients, so it is important to look at the ingredients. Also, be aware that terms such as “organic,” “clean,” “natural,” “eco-friendly,” “cruelty-free” and more are used interchangeably but do not mean the same thing.
Natural Skincare Benefits
Gentler On The Skin - In general, natural skincare products are more gentle on the skin. Products with chemicals can cause skin irritation and breakouts if you have sensitive skin. Many natural products have soothing properties rather than being an irritant.
Beneficial Nutrients - Natural ingredients such as jojoba oil, argan oil, apple juice, lemon juice, and more contains vitamins and nutrients that nourish the skin without harming the body like synthetic products might possibly cause.
Safer - Compared to products with chemicals, natural skincare products are safer. Often topical products don’t just stay on the surface but penetrate into the bloodstream as well. The chemicals entering into the body can cause harmful side effects to your internal organs, causing health issues.
Environmentally Friendly - Because natural skincare products are from nature, it doesn’t harm the surrounding environment. Unlike synthetic products, if it seeps into the ground, there wouldn’t be any adverse effects on the ecosystem.
Animal Friendly - Natural skincare product manufacturers do not test their products on animals.
